Avatar: The Last Airbender

A while back I heard about a movie that was coming out called Avatar:The Last Airbender. With that news was a trailer:

At the end of the movie, I commented to myself that the title looked like it came out of Harry Potter. Nothing more was mentioned so it drifted to the far reaches of my mind. Then a second trailer was released:

I saw it and thought that the trailer really wasn't very good. But I decided to look up the first trailer again since I seemed to remember it being cool. After watching it I read some comments and saw that people seemed to love the cartoon and that they hoped the movie was good. This prompted me to look it up on Wikipedia, and there I saw this quote: "and receiving high ratings in the Nicktoons lineup, even outside its 6–11-year-old demographic." This peaked my interest and I watched the first two-part episode; I really liked it.

I have since watched the first season and have begun the second. But my question about the upcoming movie is this: Can it even remotely touch the quality of the TV show? My default answer would be no, but after the awesome Star Trek reboot, I dare to hope.

Still Alive Type

Portal was awesome. GLaDOS was awesome. Cake was awesome. But most importantly the finish song, "Still Alive," was awesome. I also like typography.

Watchmen

I just finished watching Watchmen...

I don't even know what to say that can follow the movie, but I'll try to bumble on as best I can.

The comic was incredible. The first practically perfect blend of graphics and story, the beautiful pictures, the detailed story.

The movie was wonderful. The blend of graphics and story, the beautiful images, the brilliant choosing of which parts of the story to keep and which parts of the story to tell in quick glimpses.

The ending was different, yes. But I think this ending flowed with the story and the current political stage better than the squid would have (despite how much I wanted to see the squid).

Lots of people talked about how many "man parts" there were, but in the (admittedly cam) version I watched I saw a total of three, and two of those weren't hardly visible.

People talked about the graphic sex scene and how awkward or awesome it was. It didn't look much different than any other sex scene from any other R rated movie out there.

When I read the comic, I was so confused by the end that I reread the squid part a lot, trying to figure out where in the world it had come from. In the movie I understood what was happening and enjoyed it immensely.

Another note on the ending. Dadgum... knew the story was intense and had powerful ramifications on how we view our lives. But wow. The shear idea of some people for many people was played out so well.

Also, the music was well-paced and relevant to each scene.

I was worried about the use of slow motion. Because after 45 minutes of 300 (that was all I could stand) I was fed up with slow motion. The Matrix brought us bullet-time and since then we have used, abused and killed it. But the slow motion was used very well in Watchmen. So well, in fact that I had to look to even notice it. It was used only to amplify and enunciate the impact of a scene.

Yes it was graphic. Yes it was brutal. Yes it was passionate. But despite all the bad reviews, it was so incredibly amazing. It was almost perfect.

I just read a comment on the early release of Wolverine which says, "2 men who are immortal, who want to cut off each other's heads...where have I heard that before? The doctors in the emergency room think his healed wounds are a joke. Lifted straight from Highlander 3."

Having never heard of Highlander, I promptly Googled it and read the Wikipedia article about it which states, "Critical reaction to Highlander III has been mostly negative. It holds a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 12 reviews."

1K Project II

This is a movie made with Trackmania Sunrise, a racing game that I never got the hang of...

Anyway, the movie is wonderfully edited and timed with beautiful colors.

What I think rocks about it, is that it could have ended right after the second scene; But instead they made it a full short movie.

The Psychology of The Dark Knight

I loved this. It's old and it's about 50 minutes, but I love psychological things (hence the reason I enjoyed this interview http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5740692213665972395). But Batman's psychology is all over the place. I really like the part where they address the Joker's psychology.

Ogre

A few days ago a video about a Lego robot called Ogre If you want to know anything about it, go to the creator's site because I won't bother rehashing it here. Suffice it to say, it is really cool.

I took the movie Brian Davis (his name is the one on the website, so I think it's him) made about the robot and made it... stronger. Check it out.

My biggest problem is that he only took pictures and video from a, how it was built standpoint, and not from a, "oh no, it's going to take over the world" standpoint.

BLIND

I like machinima, I really do. But WOW machinima can only go so far before you realize that every time someone dances it is exactly the same dance routine as the last time he danced.

This guy, Percula has perfected machinima to the 'nth* degree. In a machinima called, "The Craft of War: BLIND," Percula has animated the already made WOW models so as to have much more variety in his film.

When you watch it, notice the facial movements, the guard's hand when going up the rail, notice the trumpet blast in the movie is timed with the trumpet in the music, the timing of everything to fit the music, etc.

Déjà Vu

I just finished watching Déjà Vu (I loved it.) and I had some questions when I was done.

What happens with the other timelines? The ones he left; The just keep on going without ever knowing if he made it or not. Oh well...

Best Canceled TV Shows (That I Liked)

I seem to notice that all of the TV shows I can get excited about always wind up getting canceled. Why? I don't know why, but these are my favorites:

Invader Zim; Brilliant show. Funny, not any subconscious learning going on in the background. Not a bit of, "Hey, let's try to string a plot together through the course of the show." Gir was the greatest thing to hapen to TV; ever.

Firefly; I only ran across this one recently; I have heard people talk about how great it is, but never seen it for myself. So I finally watched it. I was almost through the first (last) season before I learned that the show was doomed to only one season. Argh. I wanted to find out the Sheapard's secret history.

Futurama; This show is just funny on all levels. "Bite my shiny metal ***."

Past-Tense Movies

January 8th I published a list of movies I wanted to see this summer. Well now they have all happened and I want to see how the results compare to the original list.

1. "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything - Veggie Tales rocks! Need I say more?"
      It wasn't quite as good as I had hoped, but it was popular enough for teens I associate with to quote it, a lot.

2. "The Dark Knight - Christian Bale is such a wonderful actor and the first movie was such a great start I just can't wait."
      It was incredible! Very dark; very precise and philosophical. Great movie.

3. "Iron Man - Robots, classic comic book characters, explosions? Who could ask for more?"
     Iron Man was one of the best movies this summer. Fast, not to much emotional stuff, wonderful acting.

4. "Get Smart - I have been told that this was a great show, but I can't ever find the shows anywhere. It should be great."
     I found the original TV shows and watched the first season before the movie can out. I was slightly (very slightly) disappointed at the representation. But Steve Carell did a wonderful job portraying Maxwell Smart. Anne Hathaway, not so much.

5. "The Incredible Hulk - I didn't really enjoy the Hulk back in 2003; Too many comic book-like transitions and scene framing. Could have been great, but not so much. The Incredible Hulk, however, is shaping up to be a pretty incredible (groan) movie."
     It was great. Not slow. Liv Tyler, not so great; Edward Norton was a wonderful Bruce Banner just like Steve Carell was a great Maxwell Smart.

6. "Wall-E - Everything Pixar has ever done has been wonderful. With a track record like that I am expecting a lot from this movie. (And will probably get it.)"
   Exceded my expectations. Again and again. Almost no words the first 30-45 minutes, but more emotion than most modern actors can put out in a whole movie.

Now adding to this list:

7. Hellboy 2 - Hysterical. One liners are so great for a six foot demon living in modern society.

8. X-Files - I was impressed how closely it followed the plot ideals of the origional. All the way down to a very unsatisfactory/unresolved ending.

9. Wanted - After seeing the American trailer I didn't want to see it. But after the German trailer I couldn't wait. Seeing Ron Livingston play an assassin was really cool.

10. Hancock - I thought it was great. Will rocks.

11. The first thirty minutes of Indiana Jones - Those first thirty minutes were the very epitimy of an Indiana Jones movie. It all went downhill from there.

12. Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - Just like Lord of the Rings. Didn't follow the book.

13. Kung Fu Panda - This one surprised me. I don't like Jack Black, but he wan't to bad and Kung Fu Panda was actually entertaining.

Now, that is great and all, but wait until you hear about the mess it made and the fools who caused it.

This kid is historical, but in the article I linked to he raises a good point"When is it going to be OK to make fun of things?”

Everything has to be politically correct, non-offensive, boring, pointless mumblings, that can be retracted if you step on someone's toes.
